Maps that are placed in item frames and are the map containing the location where the item frame is located in the world sometimes lose integrity after leaving the area.
I have map rooms in my world. The center map is my home base, and then I radiate out from there, mapping as I go.
Usually, but not always, when I return after an excursion, the level one map containing my home base no longer shows my home base. It only shows the green marker for position.
If I remove the map from the item frame and replace it, integrity is still messed up, although it sometimes shows part of the map.
If I log out of the game and go back in, integrity returns. So, it seems to be a visual effect only. I'll try to add a picture the next time it happens.
NOTE: I tried to search for other bugs of this nature, but couldn't find any reported.

I've also seen this problem at previous versions, but I don't have a record of which versions. I know for sure I've seen it at the 1.18 (beta), and at snapshots with the caves & cliffs datapack(s) installed.
It has happened once again, this time at the released Java 1.18 version.
BTW, I have no mods or packs of any kind. It's pure vanilla Java Minecraft.
It would be best if you attached the world so we can inspect the affected files where needed. From the looks of it, one of the map files got corrupted.
This has happened dozens of times in dozens of new worlds over many different versions. It's easy to reproduce (I included the steps earlier).
I reproduce the previous experiment (after logging out and back in, to restore the map's image). This time, I kept the map in one of my hands the whole time. The map integrity stayed in place.
While isn't a fix or even a workaround, it may provide a clue as to what's going on, if anybody ever bothers to look at this bug.
When trying to follow the steps you had provided in your initial comment on this post, I was unable to replicate the same behavior in 23w43b. All the maps were properly rendering when I had left, and returned.

As @unknown stated previously, can you please attach an example of one of these worlds to the issue? Or, a video/screenshots of you reproducing this. Any more additional information to help to reproduce this would be great. 🙂
That's okay. Can you try reproducing it in the latest version and see if you're able to get the same result as initially?
Correction: the green position marker isn't always visible.
Also, to reproduce:
Put a collection of level one maps into item frames on a floor or wall.
One of the maps should contain the location of the map room.
Travel at least 200 blocks away, mapping with new empty maps as you go.
Return to the map room.
There is a high probability that the map containing the location of the map room will be "wrong" (i.e. missing most or all of the detail).
Log out and back in to recover the map visibility.
