Connor Steppie is right, this is intentional to connect them to caves, just like how strongholds generate.
The wiki render is just the structure alone, as in a "complete" form.
You know that doesn't ping people, right?
This is how dungeons generated since addition, it is not a mistake, and not something you accidentally program in, it's straight up an exception of blocks the walls can replace.
