macOS 10.11.6: Game crashes immediately when launching 1.18-pre2 or above

When i open minecraft in 1.18 pre release 2 or higher, it crash immediately, i think that is caused by java 17 version.  but my pc is only compatible with java 8 or lower.

Well yes, as you have stated, you need java 17 for versions above 1.18 pre-2, so this is not a bug

Are you sure that your computer can't run java 17? Did you download the latest java version and the computer can't run it? If your computer is not compatible with java 17, then you probably wont be able to play higher versions

Please attach the crash report or log. The crash report is a text file located in the [.minecraft|https://minecrafthopper.net/help/finding-minecraft-data-folder/]/crash-reports folder named crash-date-client.txt. If not available attach the complete launcher_log.txt file.

Minecraft 1.18 crashes after clicking "PLAY" on launcher. I'm on Mac OS 10.11.6. "Error: Game crashed. An unexpected issue occurred and the game has crashed. We're sorry for the inconvenience. Exit Code: 0"

Scott Redinger

Same issue as [MC-20783] and [MC-20784]. Not sure which string to follow.

Jess Edward

This report is actually confirmed. (and earliest date)

So far this has only been reported by users running macOS 10.11.6 (El Capitan), so I updated the summary to reflect that.

same thing is happening for me. First time i tried to load 18 and 18.1 i got the error message then the launcher froze and couldn't quit so had to restart the whole system. Now when i try it just crashes and quits while "preparing". Also no crash reports seem to be being made, i've checked the files. Hopefully we get a fix soon. Also as a heads up there seems to be a ticket out there with many many more reports of the same issue (MCL-20783) so it is amore widespread issue than this ticket would suggest

Same for me too.  Log4 fix is not installable if we can't install 1.18 - correct?

Can we please have an update on this bug/issue? If Microsoft is dropping support for Mac OS 10.11.6, it would be fair to let us know and to update the Minecraft system requirements to reflect this change. There is a great number of unresolved reports on this bug and thousands of unhappy campers in the online forums. It would be great if Mojang could confirm or correct our suspicions so we can move forward. To make things worse, those of us who play with our families on Realms can no longer access our 1.17 worlds because Realms doesn't allow older versions of the game. Perhaps this policy can be examined? Regardless, the Minecraft fans deserve to be updated. Thank you.

I'd love someone with inside knowledge to verify this, but I think those of us running macOS 10.11 are out of luck. 😞

As I understand it:

  1. Minecraft Java Edition 1.18 "now requires Java 17 instead of Java 16." (source)

  2. Java 17 requires macOS 10.14 and higher. (source)

EJ Mak

FYI, despite Oracle's documentation stating that macOS 10.14 is required to run Java 17 (and thus Minecraft Java Edition 1.18+ games), some users who upgraded to macOS 10.12 made comments in MCL-20783 that they are now able to play Caves & Cliffs: Part II.

If you're a macOS 10.11 user encountering problems, and your device can be upgraded to a newer OS, it's something to try.

Unfortunately, my device cannot be upgraded. 😞

Darryl Lee

I wanted to note that as I mentioned in MCL-20783, this also happened to us on OS X 10.10 (Yosemite), just for completeness.

LunizIsGlacey

Just writing here to say that much info relevant to MCL-20783 is relevant here, and so if a bug is trying to be fixed, both should be taken into account. I used to have so much faith in Mojang, and I still do (you can fix this, I hope!) but with every passing month since PR-2 and every snapshot or release for 1.18 or 1.19 which doesn't address the issue, my faith is falling away. For me and for many others, Minecraft is our favourite game we've ever played, and yet we, passionate members of the community, are being left in the dark. If it's possible, a 1.18 using Java 16 even if it is laggy would be better, or for others who play Realms (I don't, but others do) to still be able to access such services in 1.17 would be preferable. I sure hope that even if it isn't fixed soon, we are given more information about it. Just a simple "We're working on it!" or "There's nothing we can do..." or some roundabout way as porting some generation or bug fixes to a 1.17 version, just anything to give closure or hope. Please Mojang. You can do this!

Adrian Östergård

Unfortunately, the reason why this is happening is due to Minecraft Java now using Java 17, which is what 1.18 is using.

Java 17 is not supported on Mac OS versions below 10.14.5.

You will still be able to play older versions.

Help article on this subject is available here.

We can play older versions, yes ...but not on Realms with friends and family. I had to cancel my Realms account and move my worlds to a 3rd party server (Minehut). So, by cutting off Mac OS 10.11 users, there will be a drop in Realms accounts unless you let us play non-current versions (which is currently not allowed). Our computers are working perfectly; they just can't be updated.

hello, @@unknown !
Unless your computer is so old that it can barely run anything, you can easily avoid this crash by upgrading to a newer OS
The official article says that 1.18 requires MacOS version 10.14.5 or higher, so you'll need to upgrade to Monterey, Catalina, Big Sur or Mojave
However, there is a reported bug that the launcher does not start on MacOS Monterey, so the other three are better.

How to update
1, Apple logo -> about this mac
It should say the type and the year it was made. <e.g. MacBookAir (13-inch early 2015)>
2, Compare that information with this page to see if it is compatible with Big Sur
If it's not compatible with Big Sur, see this page to see if it's compatible with Catalina.
If it's not compatible with Catalina, see this page to see if it's compatible with Mojave
3, download the OS you found
download Big Sur
download Catalina
download Mojave

LunizIsGlacey

@Tail, I think you've misunderstood the issue. The issue is that many common Mac systems cannot upgrade past incompatible operating system versions, not that we don't know how.

Dott

@@unknown no, macOS mojave supports Macs up to 10 years old, so it's impossible for someone to still be using a computer older than that. "Software update" may not even show possible OS updates. so try to update it manually by clicking the link I sent

".. there is a reported bug that the launcher does not start on MacOS Monterey..."

this bug has been fixed. Doesn't impact this specific issue, but wanted to be sure this information was clarified.
