Mac OS - 10.11.6 or above; an 'unexpected' error occurs whilst loading the new Minecraft Version, 1.18.

As you can see below, these pictures show as soon as the Launcher activates, the MCL crashes, giving us the error code: 0. I am not a technician, but i believe that the MCL has some sort of bug to do with the new Java 17 download. I have tested each snapshot thoroughly. As soon as the 2nd pre-release came out; adding the new Java version, the Launcher seems to crash each time i try to load the New version. Could you please fix this bug, as many people (Which are on the same version as i am) experience this issue and have been since Pre-Release 2.

I have the same issue. macOS 10.11.6. Updated to MC 1.18 Click PLAY then the game crashes with an error code: 0.

Update- Important news, minecraft now doens't support mac os 10.11.6 anymore because they had to implement Java 17. 😞

Yeah, I called it in  MCL-19840 .

I had a strong feeling that they wouldn't support older systems but I wish that they'd have given us a heads up before hand. I'm not sure if there's a way to play older versions or at least a way to do so conveniently. While some who are more computer savvy and may have been able to see this coming there was no official notification from Mojang beforehand. It's sad and disappointing.

This may not be true. I have the same issue and operating system. I also had the same previous issue with the launcher. The previous launcher issue was fixed and I was able to play. I would also note that I was able to download and install the most current version of java and have no issue. I think this is a bug

@John. I don't think this counts as a Launcher issue but something that affects the next step of loading the game itself. I too installed Java 17 and the installation went smoothly but when I check the Java version via Terminal it says I'm at version 16. I did the install twice just to confirm.

The minecraft/runtime/ folder contains multiple Java versions. "Alpha" is java 16, "beta" is Java 17. I tried directly running the "java" executable inside each respective bundle, with the following results:

Alpha showed the help text, while beta crashed. I also tried the "legacy" and "x64" versions, which showed the help file.

Additionally, I installed Java 17 directly from Oracle into my main system library. The installer ran fine, with no errors or messages about incompatibility with 10.11.6. However, it also crashes when executed directly:

I'm not a Java or MacOS programmer so I can't say with any certainty, but it seems to me that Java 17 is not compatible with version of MacOS. I guess my next step is to try installing a patched version of 10.12 (Sierra) on my system.

@David. While it seems like you can install Java 17 without issue, the system doesn't recognize it. Checking in terminal (./java_home -V) I can see a list of different versions of Java installed. While java 17 was installed without error or issue it does not come up on the list of installed versions. Though version 16 does show up which wasn't installed prior and is of no real help in this circumstance.

I'm pretty certain you need macOS 10.12+

Unfortunately, after some more research I believe you are correct. I do not think we can play the new update due to our operating system. Java's website provides the best java version for your computer which caused my confusion. In our case, it appears we are limited to Java 8. I have also checked the java version on my computer after trying to update it and I am stuck on Java 8. Seems like we need new computers or a newer operating system...

I emailed them and they told me they are fixing it. So i think we’ll be good
