When you put 2 or more minecarts on rails, on the same block, and push them, they ride on those rails as if they were on powered rails. When the rails run out, then the minecarts drive on the land without rails as if they were on rails. In this way, you can transport 12 mobs at the same time, without rails, using minecarts.
