Dolphins drown when AI is deactivated.

Dolphins require both air and water to survive.

However, when the player gets too far away, the dolphin AI turns off and it freezes in place, but whatever timers track dolphins' air and water exposure continue counting.

This results in dolphins drowning themselves if they are loaded in, but the player is too far away for the AI to activate.

This is demonstrated by Grian in this video.

The Hermitcraft server is modified. Does this occur in vanilla? Please attach a video of this occurring with the F3 screen enabled.

@ampolive - You were right. They work perfectly fine in vanilla. Though I suspect it's because simulation distance can't be set below the max render distance of the dolphins (which is 5 chunks, far below all other mobs for some reason?).

It may occur on modded servers because the simulation distance can be set below the max render distance of dolphins. So those values may actually be tied together.

I imagine that's the reason dolphins don't render beyond 5 chunks regardless of settings?

This behavior still occurs in vanilla 1.21.1 when the AI is deactivated. This bug should be reopened.

@Jeremy - If that is the case, then it might be a good idea to open a new ticket and post the details of how you get that to happen in vanilla, along with video of it happening, if possible.

I don't know how else we can alert them to closed tickets that need re-opened.

Here is a link demonstrating the issue in vanilla Minecraft, with corroboration.

I think the reason that dolphins disappear in Grian's video is that his dolphins are not name tagged. Dolphin can despawn like squid if no player is nearby, but when I name tagged them, they no longer despawn.
