iron, chainmail and gold armor can be smelted in the furnace or blast furnace to turn into their nugget, even with netherite trim on, although netherite cannot burn. related to MC-176618
step to reproduce:
step 1: place the smithing table, then put armor trim, iron armor and netherite ingot into the smithing table, then shift and left-click on the output
step 2: place the furnace, then put that armor in the furnace and then put the fuel
expect: nothing happens
reality: the iron armor started to smelt

To support what @unknown said, here is a specific reference to the changelog where armor trims were added:
"Armor trims are purely visual with no gameplay benefits, and can only be applied to Helmets, Chestplates, Leggings and Boots"
They are not meant to affect gameplay, they are purely visual.
Per the changelogs, trims aren't supposed to affect gameplay.
Another problem is that trims are not actually related to the main material; a trim can be added for literally any item using data packs.
