Enabling narrator makes game freeze / not start until manually fixed

Update:

I closed VoiceMeeter and the narrator no longer freezes the game. If I start up VoiceMeeter while the game is already on and try to toggle the narrator, the game freezes again. I'm not sure why this is happening, but I have a guess it might be related to MC-254669 or MC-247421
I get "Failed to get OpenAL attributes" spammed in the log if I have a certain sound device selected in the game (with VoiceMeeter on). MC-247421 talks about this being logged repeatedly (albeit I'm not sure if it's under the same conditions).

Also, if you exit VoiceMeeter while the game is frozen, the game unfreezes and proceeds as normal.

When enabling the narrator either through Ctrl+B or in the accessibility options page, the game freezes and crashes with exit code -805306369.

The game refuses to load past a certain point after restarting.

I am able to manually fix it by changing the narrator option in options.txt from 1 to 0.

See the attached video.

I have seen the bug report page for that exit code (https://bugs.mojang.com/browse/MC-23484), but I don't believe any of what the moderator note says there applies here.

  • The JVM arguments are unchanged from vanilla

  • No resource pack

  • Certain I have no malware

  • I upped the memory to 4GB and then to 8GB and it still happens

Additionally the output doesn't seem to say anything out of the ordinary.

And for good measure I restarted my computer but with the same result.

Hi, I am not able to reproduce the behavior you are experiencing. Everything works as expected.

Please attach the crash report found in [minecraft/crash-reports/crash-<DATE>-client.txt|https://minecrafthopper.net/help/finding-minecraft-data-folder/] here.
If you cannot find a crash report, please attach the full launcher log found in [minecraft/launcher_log.txt|https://minecrafthopper.net/help/finding-minecraft-data-folder/].

This issue is being temporarily resolved as Awaiting Response. Once the requested information has been delivered, the report will be reopened automatically.

A crash-reports folder wasn't generated, but I attached the launcher_log.txt file. It unfortunately doesn't seem to give much more info. On lines 3314 and 3315 it just says

MinecraftJavaLoggingContext.cpp(52)] Launcher/monitor (Process Monitor) Fatal Process crashed with exit code -805306369
Game closed with id 2

The log is about right when I force closed the game when it was frozen and the crash screen shows in the launcher, like what the video shows at around 33 seconds.

Also, for reproduction sake, I am using VoiceMeeter Banana when reproducing this, and not regular VoiceMeeter. Just in case it makes a difference.

So the game is no longer freezing (narrator button cycles what is narrated), but the narrator is also not working, even when VoiceMeeter is closed. Even on older Minecraft versions. 1.20.2 and 23w40a - 41a are what I tested, with VoiceMeeter and without.

I can only assume a recent Windows update messed with something but I don't know. I updated Windows yesterday. Not sure how this could be the case, but it's the only thing I can think of.

As of now I'm going to not update this issue unless it starts happening again. I'll test again next snapshot (or when Windows gets another update I guess? Whatever comes first).

I'm not sure what was changed or what happened but the narrator works correctly now on 23w43b as well as on other versions that I tested that were affected by this.

I can only assume a recent Windows update changed audio in some way or some internal sound updates were made to the game.
