Internal Exception error instead of "You are not white-listed on this server" if not whitelisted and try joining a server

If you try to join a 1.20.2 server where you are not whitelisted, you get message "You are not white-listed on this server!"

On 23w40a-41a, that message doesn't appear and instead

Internal Exception: io.netty.handler.codec.DecoderException: java.io.IOException: Packet login/0 (aeh) was larger
than I expected, found 43 bytes extra whilst reading packet 0

is displayed.

Reproduction Steps

  1. Start a 23w41a server (after agreeing to EULA)

  2. Stop the server and change server.properties whitelist value to true and start it again

  3. Connect to the server

You are shown an Internal Exception message.

"You are not white-listed on this server!" does still show up in the server log.

Does MC-265744 describe your issue?

It's possible that this issue is a possible behavior of MC-265744.

I saw that issue prior to writing this one but I didn't think it was directly related.

I'll test again in the next snapshot where that bug is fixed.

This does appear to be fixed in 23w42a. It probably just was a behavior of MC-265744. I'm guessing this should just be marked as duplicate then?
