I don't know if this is intentional but whenever my game crashes (my game crashing is not a bug I'm reporting) the nether portal loading screen flashes before the main menu. (I cannot put an image because it flashes for such a short time.)

When I did it earlier the game crashed and sent me to the main menu but this time it sent me to the launcher. The portal thing only appears if you crash the game to the main menu. I can't do it again. I crashed the game by memory being low. So maybe you can try.

Well if it sent you to the main menu then it didn't crash, since the game is still open.
Jarl-Penguin, No I did not, It looked non transparent and not animated with it saying loading terrain. Almost like you actually went to the nether.
