Bed falsely giving the "This bed is occupied" message

Summary:

When I try to sleep in my main bed (not near any village), it says "This bed is occupied." However, I can only see my cat sitting on it. Before this happened, I accidentally hit my cat, knocking it off the bed. I also had to turn my computer off and on again while it was locked and I did not get a chance to close Minecraft before doing so (I don't know if that would cause this glitch).

Steps to reproduce?:

  1. Have a tamed cat sit on your bed

  2. Hit the cat, making it go off of the bed

  3. Try to sleep in your bed or set it as a respawn point

I'm not sure how to reproduce this yet.

Observed results:

My bed says it is occupied when there is clearly no one sleeping in it.

Expected results:

I sleep in my bed through the night.

Workaround:

Sleep in a different bedΒ or break bed to removed occupied status.

For now you can reset the occupied state by breaking and replacing the bed.

To be able to fix this it's necessary to know why this happened, and the world download doesn't really offer much information when it comes to this; it just shows the bed as occupied but there's no good way to find out why that is.

There currently are two other bug reports that could potentially apply here:

  • MC-156239 - the world was closed while someone was sleeping in the bed; this could also happen because of a Minecraft or system crash happening while or after being in the bed.

  • MC-119417 - you switched to spectator mode while sleeping in the bed

Please let us know if either of them could have caused this.

If neither of these apply, please provide some more information, e.g.: What was the last time you used the bed? Was there anything out of the ordinary then? Anything else noteworthy about this bed/its location?

This issue is being temporarily resolved as Awaiting Response. Once the requested information has been delivered, the report will be reopened automatically.

The only thing I can remember being out of the ordinary was the situation where I had to turn my computer off and on again. I tried unlocking it with Windows Hello, but it was stuck in the detection mode. As a result, I couldn't sign back into my computer. I am unsure how that would affect Minecraft, but Minecraft was open before I locked the computer. Also, thank you, Viradex! πŸ™‚

Thanks Jarl-Penguin, breaking the bed worked! I still don't know why that happened, but a Mod or whoever can mark this issue as resolved.

My vanilla server used to crash when entering a village so I upgraded the server. I always had a couple 'bed is occupied” beds in it. I thought it was because I kidnapped a couple villagers to trade with at a base nearby… But I returned to the village after months of playing and found a massive unchecked population explosion. I knew then it was a glitch and the beds were counting as empty. I broke and replaced 4 or 5 of these beds today. I'm renaming the village New York.

The root cause I believe is a server crash/stop while sleeping but the beds never get reset or unoccupied in the morning.
