issues with hit detection/registration in PvP since server switch to 1.21

Hi I found out that the hit registration doesnt work amazing since I updated my server to 1.21 or higher. Players will sometimes when hitting a player the player just slows down from the hit but doesnt actualy register that hit doing no damage/sending a damage event. I found that having a higher ping makes this even easier to happen, making pvp unplayable for a bit higher ping players. This issue is also happening to bigger servers like mcc island that recently updated to 1.21

You guys prob have already gotten a bug report like this, but I just wanted to make sure that you guys know of this bug, thats why this report. Thx for reviewing

Would MC-87222 describe you're issue?

No since its 1.8.9+ pvp that issue doesnt exist im talking about 1.21.
Everything worked normal when the server was on 1.20.4
but since I switched to 1.21+ (also other servers are talking about this now like mcci since they updated)
It started happening. So it has something to do with 1.21

Does this happen when using a vanilla server?

  • Any non-standard server build needs to be taken up with the appropriate team, not Mojang.

  • A world which had previously been opened with a modified game might be corrupted. Please try reproducing the issue in a newly generated world.

  • Any plugin issues need to be addressed to the creator of the plugin or resource pack.

  • If you have problems on large servers like Hypixel, please contact them first as they run modified server software.

This seems to be caused by the server switching from rejecting all hits above 6 blocks to rejecting all hits above 4 blocks. PaperMC recently created a patch that allows you to change this value, and setting it back to 3 (to make it a 6 block limit) makes behavior return to pre 1.20.6.

Also I believe this affects 1.20.6 and 1.20.0.

Can confirm in 1.21.1 vanilla.
