This is still happening. Twice in as many days I have lost hours of Hardcore world progress while mining because of a silent creeper explosion killing me instantly. My sound settings are all on max. I'm at my wits end

I can't reproduce this. Maybe creepers are falling down on you? A creeper which falls from 17 blocks or more detonates after only 0.25 seconds, usually not enough time for a player to react.
