Flickering and other graphical corruption appears after summoning one or multiple text_display entities on some Intel devices

The bug

Flickering on some screen elements, frame freezes and graphical corruption (some blocks and entities disappearing) appear on the screen after summoning one or multiple text_display entities. After summoning a few of them, I even managed to make the graphics driver not respond and had to force close the game. Strangely, as far as I know this is the only case in-game I managed to reproduce these graphical issues. I believe this is related to some graphics drivers on old Intel devices.

For some reason after having the instance opened for a long while, I couldn’t manage to reproduce the issue. So for this to happen I had to start a new instance and test freshly for it to happen once again, so I’m not sure if it might be related to memory.

Steps used for reproduction

These steps were followed strictly as-is for the issues to appear.

  1. Open an instance of 25w15a.

  2. Create or open a void world.

  3. After loading the world, enable F3 and summon a single text display with the next command:

/summon minecraft:text_display ~ ~2 ~ {text:"Testing Testing Testing",billboard:center}
  1. The hud and F3 text will start flickering at times.

  2. Summon another text display.

  3. The flickering will increase, and some blocks and block entities may become invisible (In my case, chests and nether portals).

  4. Summon another, or a few other text displays.

  5. The screen will freeze but the game will still play, and after a few seconds the GPU driver will not respond, unless you kill all the text displays quickly.

I am having this issue as well on my laptop and it is making it impossible to play with my friends on slightly advanced servers with custom mechanics and resource packs and effects on the screen. After a little while the graphics also freeze fully, and the game needs to be restarted for it to work again.

If you’re having the same issues please attach a screenshot with the F3 debug screen enabled.

Here’s a small attempt at recording some of the aforementioned issues. The flickering is not visible due to the frame rate, and at the end the game no longer responds.

I also made a report about this exact same thing, but for me it happens when i open any form of inventory like chests, pressing the “E” key to open the inventory, and stuff like that…

For me, summoning text displays caused a different crash, I got a “Could not allocate buffer” error, right after the entire PC froze.

This seems to have been fixed in 1.21.8 RC 1, along with the other Intel fixes.
