Items enchanted with Curse of Vanishing do not vanish upon death when in the cursor slot or a temporary slot

The bug

Items enchanted with Curse of Vanishing normally vanish upon death, irrespective of the inventory slot that they are stored in. However, they do get dropped when they are held either in the mouse cursor or in a temporary slot (such as a crafting slot).

Steps to reproduce

  1. Join a world with commands enabled.

  2. Run the following command to give yourself an iron helmet enchanted with Curse of Vanishing:

    /give @s minecraft:iron_helmet[minecraft:enchantments={"minecraft:vanishing_curse":1}]
  3. Make sure you are in Survival or Adventure mode.

  4. Run the following command to induce a death from fall damage:

    /tp @s ~ ~23 ~
  5. While falling, open the inventory and take the iron helmet in either the cursor slot or a crafting slot.

  6. After respawning, locate the death position and observe that the iron helmet was dropped upon death.

Every item in the inventory drops when you die, what’s the bug here?

NOTE: THIS IS NOT FROM THE PERSON WHO ORIGINALLY REPORTED THIS BUG, THIS IS JUST A COMMENT TO HELP ANYBODY WHO DOESN’T UNDERSTAND HOW TO REPRODUCE THIS BUG!
If anybody don’t understand and need a visual representation, here it is! (You don’t need to use an iron helmet, any item that can have that enchantment works and you can enchant the item on the anvil if you want because that works too)

One thing to note, if you have keepInventory game rule set to true, then I think that this is work as intended.

The video in previous comment clearly has keepInventory enabled.

Just tried with keepInventory disabled, as in the video. I can confirm that if you are having the item in cursor (i.e. you are in the process of manually moving the item), the item does not despawn.

At that moment, the item is not in the inventory, nor is it in the world (as an entity). It is in temporary state.

Confirmed, although weirdly it only seems to happen in Survival; if you die in Creative to /kill, the item disappears as intended.

Is there anyway to have the item replaced? it was very time consuming to achieve and extremely disappointing to lose. I tried asking nicely the person who picked it up, for the item back, but they just blocked communication.

Well after I redo the bug without keepInventory, the bug still works

Thank you for your report!
After consideration, the issue is being closed as Working as Intended.

Please note, that mechanics of the game may change between updates.
