Elytra's durability is consumed when sinking/swimming/floating after flying into water

I was advised to put this part of MC-279236 into a new report.

This bug exists since 25w02a.

Steps to reproduce (see video):

  • Equip an elytra.

  • Enter survival mode.

  • Fly into a sufficiently deep body of water.

  • Release all movement keys.

  • Note that you are now sinking while still being in the elytra animation.

  • Open your inventory and look at your elytra.

  • ❌ The elytra’s durability is consumed perpetually.

The durability is also consumed when swimming or floating on the surface.

Why this should not happen:

While sinking/swimming/floating the elytra adds nothing to your movement abilities (you can sink just fine without an elytra); this means the elytra’s durability is consumed without the elytra actually being active. This bug could therefore lead to players' elytras inadvertently breaking; they might swim through an ocean, not intending to use their elytra, and break their elytra anyway.

I think this is because you can still fly underwater, you can use fireworks, and it seems really slow to try swimming

Removing the underwater elytra feature would make elytra less useful and make tridents more useful

Can confirm in 1.21.5 and 25w18a.

This is not a problem, it is a mechanic that has been in the game for years, you can use elytra underwater.

The flying underwater is not what I reported here. I outlined in this report how the durability is decreased while not flying, but sinking/swimming/floating.

Hey, so from what I understand, and from the video, you are technically still mounted in an elytra flying state while under water. As AKAN5 said, people use the elytra under water, and if you are still in a sinking state, you are supposed to still be in an elytra flying state. I do not foresee this being changed as it is not really an error, and people use sinking in water straight to flying all the time. I suppose the developers could technically make it so that if you are stationary, and under water for X amount of time, then you could auto un-mount. Like I said, this could be annoying for players who fly underwater commonly, so I don’t see it changing any time soon.
