Maps held in one hand are not fully visible when the player is underwater

Since held items are enlarged when the player is underwater, maps (including buried treasure maps) held in one hand are not fully visible, making them difficult to use. This is not really an issue for other items.

Steps to Reproduce

  1. Obtain a filled map of any kind.

  2. Hold the map in the player’s hand (main or off-hand).

  3. Stand above water and observe the map – it displays correctly.

  4. Submerge fully underwater while still holding the map.

  5. Observe the map’s appearance – it suddenly enlarges and extends off the screen.

Please edit your report to change the Affected Version to the version shown on the Minecraft title screen

Can confirm on Minecraft 1.21.9 pre-release 4. The hand overlay and held items get scaled, so the behavior isn’t specific to maps, but the usability of maps specifically is impacted by the behavior.
