In 1.2.5 and earlier, lighting a Nether portal will instantly activate the portal. In 1.3.1 (snapshot 12w18a) and beyond, the fire stays for a split second before the portal is activated.
To reproduce: Build a nether portal and activate it with fire. (flint and steel, fire charge, etc.)
What I expected: The portal would automatically activate with no other effects.
What I observed: The fire used to light the portal would stay for a split second before the portal activates.
Attachments recorded in 1.2.5 and 1.21.10 are provided for comparison.
