Knockback dealt to entities is based on the player’s look direction instead of relative position, causing illogical knockback in some situations

The Bug:

Knockback dealt to entities is based on the player’s look direction instead of relative position, causing illogical knockback in some situations.

This is incredibly hard to reproduce consistently. The use of a server with some slighly latency is recommended.

Steps to Reproduce:

  1. Summon a husk.

  2. Begin sprinting toward the husk while looking away from it, and flick your mouse and hit the mob.

  3. The husk will receive knockback in the direction you were facing. If it didn’t, repeat step 2.

Observed Behavior:

Knockback is based on the player’s look direction.

Expected Behavior:

Knockback would be based on the player’s relative position.

Most common way of doing it on survival but only with projectiles:

I didn’t observe the same result doing the way the creator of the report…

Just to clarify I used a command that turns the player to the opposite way of the entity when I hit it but it stills receives knockback as indented

Failed to reproduce in all attempts

I can’t seem to reproduce it in singleplayer(I only tested on singleplayer), but I can confirm of it’s existence.
People use this as a PVP technique and it has existed for over 10 years. It is referred to as “Knockback Displacement”

I believe that the steps to reproduce in this post aren’t in the correct order and that is why people are having trouble reproducing it.

As I mentioned above, this is a term referred to as Knockback Displacement. I looked in to the specifics of replicating it and in order to do this you need to either be sprinting(as mentioned in the post) or have a knockback enchanted weapon.

Now for the issue, in order to do this you have to look away first, then turn to the mob and hit it.
I will attach a video below.

If this is referring to something separate then I can’t seem to reproduce it, but this gives a similar outcome as described.

Thank you for your report!
After consideration, the issue is being closed as Won't Fix.

Please note that this is not the same as Working as Intended, as this bug report correctly describes behavior in the game that might not be the intended or desirable behavior, but it will not be fixed right now. Sometimes, this is because the issue reported is minor and/or impossible to change without large architectural changes to the code base.
