I got nearly the same amount of tide armor trims after killing 30 elder guardians each with looting 255 (7) and without looting (6).

Looting doesn't increase the chance of elder guardians dropping tide armor trims.

However, this issue is Working As Intended.
Elder guardians have a 20% chance to drop 1 tide armor trim upon death. Looting does not affect the chance, and the elder guardian does not need to be killed by a player in order for the trim to drop.
Please note, that mechanics of the game may change between updates.
Things such as graphics, sounds, world creation, biomes, Redstone, villagers, and animals may not work the same in current versions.
