Nausea from potent sulfur is only given to the player when touching water, and more specifically, when the center of the player’s hitbox is touching water. Even when standing directly above the cloud of gas, you still will not get nausea unless the center of your hitbox is in water.
Notably, nausea can be obtained from the gas cloud when standing on the surface outside the pool of water, but again only if the bottom center of your hitbox is in water, which is inconsistent with how a gas cloud would be expected to work. The nausea should be dependent on how far you are from the source, not that and whether you are touching water.
Steps to reproduce:
Place a block of potent sulfur in a 1 block deep pool and place a door in the water nearby
Stand on the edge of the water such that you are still in the water but partly in the air gap of the door
Look straight down to use your crosshair to locate the center of your hitbox
While looking straight down, position yourself so the cursor is above water (you should correctly get nausea here)
Move ever so slightly into the air gap such that your crosshair is not pointing at water
Expected result: You should continue to get nausea since you are still within the potent sulfur gas cloud
Actual result: The nausea goes away, despite being nearly the exact same distance from the potent sulfur
