Switching the host's game mode causes new LAN players to ignore the forced game mode

When opening a world to LAN, if other players' game mode is set to the same as your own game mode, switching your game mode will switch the game mode players join as, instead of the forced game mode you picked in the Open to LAN screen.

When opening a world to LAN, if other players' game mode is NOT set to the same as your own game mode, players who join will be set to the forced game mode you picked in the Open to LAN screen as expected.

To reproduce:

  1. Create a survival world with commands enabled

  2. Join the world (do not change your game mode yet)

  3. Open the world to LAN, set other players' game mode to survival and disable commands

  4. Set your game mode to creative

  5. Have another player join your LAN world

  6. That player now has creative mode instead of survival mode as expected

This does not happen if steps 3 and 4 are reversed.

I firmly believe this should get more traction, most of the controversy surrounding the F3+F4 “change” stems from this bug existing.

Additionally. Note that it doesn't just include F3+F4, F3+N, /gamemode command by the host self in chat.

But also, if any other player changes the host’s game mode, a datapack changes the host's game mode.

I haven't tested this, but, probably also if the host dies in a hardcore LAN world and is thus changed gamemode to spectator. If someone could confirm this?

It seems ANY change of the host’s gamemode regardless of method, will adjust the defaultgamemode of the world.

so because MC-308846 is Working as Intended.

I expect the “/defaultgamemode will change the world host’s gamemode and not the other player’s gamemode” in open to lan I added to that other ticker to be working as intended and so this issue to also be working as intended, which will be a problem for map making.

That issue is about the “Allow Commands for other players” button not affecting the host, which is intended (even if it is weird that everyone except the host is allowed to run commands).

This issue is about other players sometimes joining with the “Game Mode for other players” and sometimes ignoring “Game Mode for other players” and joining with the host game mode instead.

The changelog states:

Open to LAN Screen

  • The host of a world can now configure the "Game Mode" and "Allow Commands" values for other players in your world (separate from themselves)

    • These buttons are available under a "Settings for Other Players" header in the Open to LAN screen

Since the “Game Mode” values for other players in your world are sometimes followed and sometimes ignored, that is a bug.
