Turtles not spawning naturally after 1.21.1

I was playing skyblock on 1.21.11 and noticed that I couldn’t get turtles to spawn. I read through the wiki and created a testing world that satisfied all the requirements, but no turtles spawned after tick sprinting for a very long time.

I play with mods, so I tried to test without them. All further tests were done on pure vanilla versions.

My setup is as follows: I create a peaceful superflat world using the desert preset, except I replace the biome with minecraft:beach. After creating the world, I make a giant roof with light blocks with /fill ~ ~5 ~ ~100 ~5 ~100 light (that shouldn’t be necessary, but I do it just in case). After that I just tick sprint for a long time and observe.

It should be noted that no other mobs can spawn, but in similar scenarios I set up command blocks that log and kill all mobs to prevent the mob caps from filling.

So, here are the versions I tested with this setup:

  • 1.20 to 1.21.1 (including snapshots) - works

  • 24w33a, 24w36a, 1.21.2-pre1, 1.21.2 - doesn’t work

  • 1.21.11 - doesn’t work

  • 26.2 - doesn’t work

This should be enough, but I also tested another setup on 1.21.11: I created massive well-lit platforms of sand from the void to the build limit, leaving 2 block gaps between them (on earlier versions 1 block was enough, but I did 2 for safety). No turtles spawned, even though I positioned myself within 128 blocks of each platform sequentially.

Hi!

Thank you for your report!
However, this issue is Invalid.

Your game, launcher or server is modified.
If you can reproduce the issue in a vanilla environment, please recreate the issue.

  • Any non-standard client/server/launcher build needs to be taken up with the appropriate team, not Mojang.

  • A world which had previously been opened with a modified client might be corrupted. Please try reproducing the issue in a newly generated world.

  • Any plugin issues need to be addressed to the creator of the plugin or resource pack.

  • If you have problems on large servers like Hypixel, please contact them first as they run modified server software.

The launcher does not modify the game in any way, it is only for automating the management of multiple instances. Additionally for each test I did I created a new world, and I was using 100% vanilla minecraft.

It could be that something is somehow wrong with my system specifically, in which case I would like someone else to test this with the same setup. However, aside from that possibility, everything is pure and vanilla.

Honestly it is upsetting to me that I have gone to great lengths to test this behavior and you just dismissed it seemingly without even considering what I wrote, simply looking at the “environment” part.

Please note that Prism Launcher does in fact modify the game, which you can see by checking the stack traces in crash reports. When you are adamant that a gameplay issue you are about to report happens in a completely vanilla environment, you are allowed to leave the Environment field empty to avoid misunderstandings.

About this issue, since turtles can only spawn up to three blocks above sea level, your tests fail because the sea level in superflat worlds is at Y=-63, meaning turtles can only spawn up to Y=-60. This issue is reported at MC-278019, therefore this report is a duplicate of that report.

Alright so I tried the same thing in a regular world and turtles spawned. I guess something’s wrong with Single Biome worlds as well. Going to test 1.21.11 now.

I tested your Single Biome setup in 26.3 Snapshot 7 earlier and turtles did spawn for me. (I had to wait about 2-3 in-game days with tick sprint though).

That’s interesting. Not sure what’s happening.

I guess the issue is somehow on my side, but I really have no idea what could be it considering I made a brand new virtual machine for this.

Perhaps the lagginess is to blame, it’s a virtual machine after all.

That and prism launcher disabling turtle spawns somehow ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
