Mending Elytra loses durability points instantly when repaired instead of gaining them.

[BUG] Elytra Enchanted Only with Mending Fails to Prioritize XP Interception Mid-Flight

Description

When a player is actively gliding using an Elytra enchanted only with Mending, experience orbs collected mid-flight (e.g., from hitting a mob with a bow, breaking a block with projectile weapons, or picking up airborne orbs) occasionally fail to prioritize the Elytra's durability bar.

Because an Elytra without Unbreaking III drains a strict 1 durability point per second, any disruption in the Mending XP-interception loop causes rapid, unexpected item failure. Instead of repairing the wings, the XP passes directly into the player's primary level bar, leaving the Elytra to break mid-air.

Steps to Reproduce

  1. Equip an Elytra with a durability value of 100/432, enchanted only with Mending.

  2. Ensure no other armor pieces or items with Mending are equipped.

  3. Launch into continuous flight using firework rockets.

  4. Fly directly through a floating cluster of Experience Orbs (generated by a player-kill or automated system).

  5. Monitor the item's durability data via the F3 debug screen or inventory tooltip.

Expected Result

The incoming XP orbs should be intercepted by the Mending modifier. Every 1 XP point should instantly restore 2 durability points to the Elytra until it reaches 432/432.

Actual Result

The XP orbs bypass the equipped Elytra completely. The player's experience level increases, but the Elytra's durability continues its rigid 1-point-per-second decay, eventually resulting in a tattered, broken item state mid-flight.

Your bug report does not correctly describe what is shown in the video. I am not able to reproduce what is described in your bug report and what is shown in your video. However, I did notice mobs moving abnormally fast in your video so I am suspecting that you accidentally sped up your world to a high value using the /tick rate command which makes it seem like your elytra instantly breaks when in reality the durability rate is just being sped up. You should do /tick rate 20 to slow your world back down to a normal rate.

To further clarify, the elytra does get repaired while in use. I tested this by using the bottle of experience on the ground and used the elytra to fly close to the ground to collect the xp while never touching the ground.

Mending items only repair when experience points are collected. At no point in your video did you collect any. Please stop creating intentional duplicates, and please do not use AI to write bug reports.
