Minecraft no longer recognises presses of some media keys at all

From 1.13 to 26.2, if a key that did not have an official translation string or identifier was set to a game control in the Key Binds menu, it would appear as scancode.###, in which ### represents either the Linux evdev ID or Windows extended Set 1 PS/2 scancode number.

In 26.3, this changed to all unrecognised keys being set to “Not Bound” (MC-310108). This was strange, and resulted in bugs as well as control conflicts.

As of 26.4 snapshot 2, perhaps as a result of the fix for MC-311949, the game appears to not register that a key was pressed at all. This means that these key presses are no longer bindable to controls, locking players out of being able to use keyboards and hardware that previously worked just about fine.

To reproduce:

  • have a keyboard with a Calculator or Mail key, or other similar rare buttons

  • try to bind it to a control in a version from 1.13 to 26.2

  • try to bind it to a control in 26.3

  • try to bind it to a control in the latest dev version

Expected results: it should be bindable.

Actual results: it binds fine (if with a funny name) in versions 1.13-26.2, binds to Not Bound in 26.3, and cannot be used at all in 26.4.
