You can see better underwater than in air, especially at night

If you wear a helmet with a decent Respiration enchantment, then at night you can see better underwater than you can in air. The ability to see better is great, but better than you can see in air? That seems over-generous.

In particular, you can see stars and the moon very clearly while under water, which looks very odd, and also surface mobs.

Apologies if this is a dupe; 'underwater' gives 170+ hits, but I don't think this particular side-effect of Respiration's enhanced vision has been raised.

In this image I'm looking more or less straight ahead.
I can see stars and clouds. The stars really ought to be hidden anyway, because they're below the level of the horizon. Without Respiration, this bug, while still present, is not discernible, because it's too dark. With Respiration it becomes quite apparent.

This bug should be reopened, as it's still there in 25a, and in fact I'm expanding the description.

Go underwater, near a jungle, say. Note how the trees are quite hard to see even when you're just a couple of blocks deep. (I have a handy ocean biome next to my jungle, with a sea shelf close to shore. Makes it very easy to see this effect down to depths of about 12 m)

Now try again with, say, Respiration 3, and those same trees are much clearer, especially as you go deeper.

This is true by day and night.

Seeing underwater stuff better is expected, especially with a good helmet. But being able to see non-underwater stuff better too, (better than you can in air) especially stars, trees, and even clouds, is unexpected.

Is this still a concern in the current Minecraft version 1.8.1 Prerelease 3 / Launcher version 1.5.3 or later? If so, please update the affected versions in order to best aid Mojang ensuring bugs are still valid in the latest releases/pre-releases.

No response for over a year.
