Crops don't count as updates/Light Farms no longer working again 13w41b/a

This bug reappeared again from 1.6.2/1.6.1
it's exactly the same as this bug technically https://mojang.atlassian.net/browse/MC-19886
guess this is technically a duplicate, why is this still a problem?

I first noticed the issue while playing SMP where I was making a rather large light farm like I usually do. Then I noticed that I couldn't get the wheat to "pop" off same with the potatoes.

So I tried numerous things to get it to work raising/lowering my redstone lamps, eventually I decided to test it with Single Player creative. To no avail I couldn't find anyway to get ANY form of light farm to work even using basic torches and removing them didn't work.

so it's a recent issue that I hope gets fixed soon.

...you want Mojang to undo a bugfix? It seems that they changed that, this was clearly an exploit.
(I hope you mean this "light farm": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xu1jNn8p6MU)

How is that a bug fix? It was like that all the way in alpha with torches. Matter of fact is was like that if you didn't have torches and it became night until recently, which was to my knowledge at the time a design feature.

galaxy_2alex

It is at least an exploit. I don't think you're supposed to have such a wheat farm. Yes, it might be MC-19886 again, but the situation you described it with, but I think this kind of wheat farm is not supposed to be working.

Wish I knew this before I spent 12 hours over 2 weeks gathering all the stuff for this farm in SMP. What's the point of Redstone Lamps now? A on-off switch for a mob spawner maybe.

Seriously why can I not be able to farm like this? The scale of it isn't any better than water farms, it's more resource intensive than water farms, it's worked like this for longer than water based farms, it makes me feel like I actually worked for my farm...

...well, that shows again the nice thing about Minecraft. There is a technical aspect, a building aspect etc. Especially "What's the point of Redstone Lamps now?" is really "silly" question (not offensive, sorry in advance 😉): They were originally added to have a light source that you can switch on and off. Just this gives it so many possibilities for using, not only in technical things (like you described).
Mojang tries to balance the game. Sometimes they need to make decisions that are not easy, especially if it's a bug that is used very often in many builds or machines. This is one of them, and they decided to "fix" it.

Where did they say this was a "Exploit", I've searched everywhere the only thing I can find on someone calling a light based farm an exploit is you. Looked through the patch notes until 1.5 didn't find anything about a fix for farming/wheat/light/redstone lamps that involve a light farm, also looked at the blog and saw 0 reasons to say that it was considered a exploit.

Lewis Robinson

Looks like it was always an intended feature Alex, and that it was never an exploit. They didn't decide to "fix" it, it was a mistake.

Torabi

This is actually a duplicate of MC-30877, which @unknown fixed in 14w21a. So it turns out crops not responding to light updates was a bug, and not an intentional change.
