What I expected to happen was: to bonemeal the sapling a few times like the rest and then have a tree grow.
What actually happened was: nothing, nothing happened but fertilization particles.
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Make or plant some large grass,
2. Plant an Acacia sapling directly next to the large grass,
3. Have fun trying to get it to grow, because it won't.
This may happen with other saplings, I don't know for sure.

Is this still a concern in the current Minecraft version 1.7.4 / Launcher version 1.3.7 or later? If so, please update the affected versions in order to best aid Mojang ensuring bugs are still valid in the latest releases/pre-releases.
Since acacias are too small/low, they will not grow when they're next to large grass. Some tall trees like pines grow every time. Works as Intended.

I suspect this is working as intended if it is set up similar to other trees...
"Small oak trees ... They require no horizontal clearance at the base, 1 block around the main trunk, 2 blocks from the top of the trunk up to the ceiling and 6-8 blocks of vertical clearance. Thus, a small oak tree can grow in a 1 deep hole, but not a 2 deep hole. Just as jungle trees, their growth will not be hindered by wood, leaves, dirt and saplings."
Your tall grass is 2 blocks high...
