When placing water directly on top of crops (e.g. wheat, carrots, potatoes) it destroys the plant entirely, and you get no drops from it.
Edit: Due to some confusion, I am talking about when you place a water source on the same block a crop is occupying.

I can confirm. This bug also occurs when placing a water block on a block that a torch is placed on.
