Vaniila server (private to home network). Multiple windows clients affected. Restarting server solves the problem, however it re-surfaces an arbitrary time later, usually days/weeks later, but has once started again almost immediately. When problem occurs, food bar depletes whilst player stood still (AFK), at a rate of about 1 icon per 20 seconds. This is much like MC-43601, however I'm not (knowingly) close to mobs, if I am, they are more than 8 blocks away, whereas MC-43601 suggests you have to be only a block or two away.

Coming back from a quick test and my Saturation Level did deplete on it's own without any movement. I'll test in a brand new world because I have a few theories I want to break.
Cannot seem to recreate this in a new world. Tried depleting my Food Level all the way, eating Zombie Flesh, and other things that I did recently before this issue occurred in the world it originated. Even though I couldn't find a trigger I did find that exiting the world seems to fix the issue, but that might require logging into a different world. Not too sure about it, but if it comes up again I'll have to test this as well.
@anyone having this issue: Please provide steps to reproduce and / or attach a world showing this issue.

Is this still a concern in the current Minecraft version? If so, please update the affected versions in order to best aid Mojang ensuring bugs are still valid in the latest releases/pre-releases. If this has been done, we can reopen the issue.
Keep in mind that the "Resolved"-Status on this ticket just means "Answered", and that we are waiting for further information on whether this issue still exists or not. We will reopen it as soon as the requested information has been delivered.
This still happens in -pre3, see MC-69967
I speculate that Minecraft thinks the food is being spent healing hearts, even though the player's hearts are full.
The bug happens seldomly, maybe once each 200-300 sessions I've seen it?
Same happens to me as stated - I started to notice sometimes when I am just building, even though I'm not doing anything like jumping in the game or sprinting, the hunger bar will decrease to zero and start to kill me. I fill the hunger bar back up with steak or other items again and minutes later I see it decreasing this might happen 4 times before it rights itself last time by eating some bread, It seems sometimes Minecraft just decides to drain your food meter for no known reason it happens rarely but is a pain especilay if you are not near a food source when it happens. After reading this will try when it is happening F3+C for 10 seconds to generate a report for you.
I'm getting this problem in 1.8.4 on my Realms server. It seems like it's only affecting the host (me) (it did affect one other person before, but it randomly started working). The username is Chikakoo, and the world is the first Realms world, if it helps.
A little more detail - the server is set to hard mode. One place it was happening was away from all mobs (~170 blocks in the sky, so it's not the mobs nearby thing - and I wasn't in water).
The issue might relate to MC-43601, but I don't see it as the same issue, as the circumstances are different. This issue doesn't require mobs to be in close proximity. I don't know if the issue still exists though, but I'm sure it will get re-opened if someone else continues to have the problem.
I am playing on Snapshot 14w11b using the 1.3.11 Launcher and I am getting the same issue. I've only noticed it recently. It started when I went to a desert and started collecting a bunch of sand and sandstone. Since I was clearing the blocks so fast my Food Level drained quickly and I had drained it for the first time in that world. Now I run out of hunger when standing still but only when all of my Saturation Level run out it seems. I'll have to test to see if it drains the Saturation Level as well, but my guess is that it does not.
