When a painting is broken, it dramatically flies off in one direction, which is ok, but I go to chase it and it is not there. they always land in the opposite direction or a few blocks away. This only affects survival mode.
I dont know how to properly describe it. It can be easily replicated by placing paintings, going into survival mode, and breaking them and watching where they fly and then seeing where they actually land.

Confirmed.
While looking south, the painting flies off direction east, but lands in the west.
