I placed a painting on a wall and removed it, to get a new one.
The item dropped and suddenly began to fly to the roof.
Another painting landed on the floor and moved away from me

Confirmed. Placed a series of paintings on a wall, breaking each one as I go, last one placed wiggled itself on top of the building.
Probably due to the entity flyoff placing the painting inside the blocks, where they now travel up automatically.

this happened to mm too, in 1.4.5
i placed an item frame and when it fell off (because i broke the block it was on) it started flying around, instead of staying in one spot

I had a painting go through an entire mountain and drop on an opening below. Seems like it drops right at the intersection between blocks. IMO paintings fly off too fast, it's like they explode off the wall.

Still exists in 1.6.1

Is this still a concern in the current Minecraft version? If so, please update the affected versions in order to best aid Mojang ensuring bugs are still valid in the latest releases/pre-releases.

Here's a question: why do they move at all? Why can't they just appear in the block in front of the frame (motionless, possibly in mid-air) and then fall from that point. The "item goes flying" code is beyond broken, why do we keep it (at least in this situation)?
Oh and it's gotten 100 times worse in the snapshots for 1.8 due to them toughening up the clipping codes. It's got a 25% chance of phasing up through the ceiling now, even if it's not close to the ceiling. The other day (on 14w06b) I found a diamond vein and my first thought was "ok 8 ores, so that's probably 6 diamonds I can get". Then I did a mental double-take and thought "ok this sucks I REALLY REALLY REALLY hope they fix this (it being worse in 1.8) before the release version because it's reaching catastrophic levels."

Ya this is still a issue as of 14w11b. It happens 100% of the time when you try to knock something out of an item frame when there's a ceiling right above it.
I made an example gif! http://i.imgur.com/lYbSfcw.gif

My report got duplicated to this report, so good thing this isn't only happening to me. I had to destroy blocks in the area looking for my item. I hope they fix it and bring it out with the 1.8 vanilla update.

Also happening in 14w32d. Item frame directly below ceiling throws the item in a way that it seems to totally disappear. I tested it in a 2*4*4 chamber with double thick walls and a four block thick ceiling. I had four item frames in four rows and put items in them all. The items in the top row, directly under the ceiling, were popped outside of the chamber every time, while the others landed inside the room. I ran the test multiple times - sometimes the item flew so far that I at first thought it was truly gone.

Maybe better Title:
Paintings and Item Frames have no ceiling collision when broken off a wall, so they "item elevator" themselves to the surface

This issue is devastating dealing with maps. You pop a map out of an item frame, it hits the roof and then lands, and then gets teleported god knows where, 100% of the time. If you're in an underground room then it becomes nearly impossible to know where it went (I checked the surface, not there). All the time spent filling out that 2k x 2k block space, all gone. It just happened to me in my 1.8 survival world.

Something similar to this started happening to activated tnt in 1.8.
MC-66090: TNT is no longer colliding with a block placed above it when the TNT is triggered
It didn't start doing this until 1.8. Maybe it's related, but it's kinda pushing it since primed tnt isn't really the same as an item entity. But it IS similar in that it also doesn't have ceiling collision.

Comment report similar to Owen Cail on 11/Oct/14 - devastating to map walls - have lost 3 maps when removing them from map wall/item frame and map leaves frame and seems to drift upwards through wall blocks. My room is underground and in the 2nd and 3rd case I have attempted to follow the maps by digging out all surrounding blocks in a 4 block radius and tunneling to the surface. I have never found a map object once this happens.

this seemed to happen to me too, although visually it fell on the floor, and there it dissapeared.

ya clientside it seems to be acting properly

Is this bug ever going to be fixed? I just had it strike and make me lose one of my massive maps in a survival world.

I noticed it only on Multiplayer.

I've noticed this as well when removing maps and frames off a wall. Additional notes: when removing, I once found them again 5 levels up and up to 10 squares back--basically they were on the surface outside my house. I've had them disappear when a creeper exploded on the surface (again, no blocks closer than 2 to the map wall was destroyed). I did also notice when I replaced that wall area with obsidian that there was a block hole holding a frame from said creeper explosion (I had to dig to find it).
So, it appears when an explosion occurs, it can vibrate a map wall and knock frames and maps off. This is undesirable unless that wall it was on had actually gotten destroyed. Further, it appears the maps and frames can end up in a single-block wall cavity that is non-visible/accessible.
This is the latest 1.8.8 in both single and multi-player modes.

That part of paintings and items from item frames are very annoying. They should go to the player inventory.

Even if the "shaken off the wall" feature remains, the real problem with both this and simply removing it from the wall appears to be that they're allowed to fall behind the facing direction. The way my house is set up, there is a hole out of the basement room, into the main room, where there is another hole out to the roof/open air. So the "flying" logic may well see the whole of the area as open space in which it can send things. A closed room may well work better, if anyone knows do let me know. Thanks.

The same thing happens with item frames too. From what i've seen if you break the item(possibly only map,not sure)and it falls on the ground it vanishes.I think it actually falls down the block and if you mine at the last block you saw it you may find it or either it does fall under bedrock?!Not sure just a theory because once i had seen an item(not item frame)doing that....

In 15w35d the dropped item disappears

Confirmed: 15w39c
Situation: place 3x3 solid blocks, stand in middle, place itemframe(s), while removing them, they instead drop in the open area, they fly to the "roof".

It definitely happens in 1.8.8. My map found itself on the second floor of my house, and it was on the first floor in the item frame, not even against the ceiling.

This becomes an extreme problem with item frames, since when you remove an item from them it will be ejected through the ceiling or floor. If it lands somewhere deep in the ground... you will never get it back. It's bad enough that it makes actually finding the item difficult after it fly's off, but losing your best tools because you thought an item frame might be a convenient place to keep it?

This still happens in 15w41b.
It's a bigger deal now because the new Elytra is only found in an item frame in a ship which is often above void. If you don't build a massive safety net under the ship, there's no way to stop the Elytra sometimes flying through the wall, off the ship, and into the void.

I made a video showing the bug in 15w41b: https://youtu.be/r-5-ToPwDUM

@@unknown Possible workaround: Break the block behind the frame.

Keeps happening in 15w41b

This still happens in 15w42a

I think it got even worse in the 1.9 snapshots. Probably because of the new collision system. I hope this will be fixed soon. Until then, you may want to place some stairs above the itemframe before clicking it, so that the item gets bounced off most of the time.

Confirmed for 15w43b. Very annoying issue.
Happens also with Item Frames sometimes.
