minecarts that go off rails now sink into the ground - also they sit so low that players sitting inside them cannot hit the minecart to get out. also - if said case happens on slabs shifting out no longer places you on the slab, but next to it in the air (if in air) as of 14w10a you can safely get out of the minecart when it's in the ground (but not 100% of the time)

Does not appear to happen on flat surfaces, however if a ramp is created and at the end of the ramp there is no stop-block, the minecart will pop off the track and sink into the ground.
Confirmed for
1.8.6 It is still there but minimal causing probably MC-18969
How to reproduce:
Press
F3
+B
to see the hitboxesCreate a Minecart on a rail
Pull the rail away with a sticky piston
Now after about a second the Minecart will slightly sink into the ground. This also happens with spawner minecarts after they spawned something and if they are not on a rail
Confirmed for
15w50a
Due to MC-66894 you can easily reproduce it:
Place a rail
Summon a MinecartSpawner on top of it
Use the following command to remove the rail
/execute @e[type=MinecartSpawner,c=1] ~ ~ ~ /setblock ~ ~ ~ air
The fire particles are now in the block below the minecart
