This happens from time to time when playing SMP with a friend on my local minecraft server.
The chest seems to remain on the open state (regarding the animation) and closes once I rightclick it to view its inventory, so basically it's inverted. The issue doesn't seem to resolve itself after relogging, so it must be a server-side issue.
It usually happens after playing for a while, after frequently using a chest. Have been able to reproduce this for a few times, so I'll provide a screenshot whenever it happens again.

Weird, I only noticed this since I started an own little 1.4 private server for me and my brother. Before that I played on a bukkit server, didn't have that issue at any time.
I've also seen chests glitching in this manner ever since animating chests were introduced. I can't reproduce it on demand, but when it does happen the chest stays open and will not close no matter what. Seems to happen more often when multiple players are accessing the chest at the same time.
That might be it, back then I was the only one using my chests anyway, and now it's me and my brother both sharing the same chests, it has happened 2 times so far.
Had it last night, it might be something to do with moving in range of the chest while someone else has it open. The open state of the chest perhaps isn't sent to your client when you get close, so when the other person closes it, a change open/closed gets sent to client which is now inverted.
In the background I was downloading about 300gb of video from the security system across the local network. While I was not experiencing any lag or other unusual activity no chests closed the first-time during. Single-player 1.8.2-pre7.
Yes, it's back again. I haven't played MC for some time but i did a few days ago and noticed that a chest was open when it really wasn't.
It is not fixed:
Player 1 opens chest
Player 2 opens chest
Player 1&2 close chest
Chest is now inverted.
If you think it's still an issue, please file a new bug report.
Seen this since I started playing SMP on 1.2.5
