If there is a mod on you can claim this report as a folly on my part... LOL the piston and the slime block was adjacent to the ground.
With the new slimeblock-being-pushed-by-piston physics you're basically trying to push more than 12 blocks (the blocks in front of the sand immediately below the slime block). Here's a link to the changelist for 14w18a:
Yeah, pistons cannot push 13 blocks, so the same applies to the slime block (attempting to push the sand, with the sand pushing the other sand and so on). That's why screenshot 2 works.
And you are sure that the sticky pistion isnt at the ground? Screenshot please
