Reproduce:
1. Open a new superflat,
2. dig 2 blocks down,
3. Place a piston at 1 block height,
4. Place a redstone block ON the piston,
5. Place a redstone block under the piston,
6. Break the redstone block under the piston.

This really seems not like a bud switch, else placing a block next to the piston should contract the piston

It's not. If you might read in the background, it's my BUD lab. It was discovered as BUD but then proven as a regular glitch.
This is indeed a duplicate of MC-108. The piston is being powered by the block of redstone. Pistons can be powered by blocks that are two blocks above them, regardless of the orientation of the piston. Try placing a redstone block two blocks above a piston (as shown in "Step 1"), then updating the piston by placing a block next to it. As seen in "Step 2", this will cause the piston to extend.
