Fps is very poor on AMD cards it seems, I recently purchased a very high end GPU the R9 290 4GB edition.
Affected versions is 14w20b however I have gone back to 1.7 and it seems like it is still the case there. I went back even further to 1.6.4 and it seems like the fps is better but only slightly it's still not what it should be. (you can see screenshots below) - CPU load when taking screenshots was about 20%
I had a gtx 630 before upgrading and I used to get anywhere from 100fps to 300. After upgrading to the R9 290 I am getting anywhere from 15fps to 55fps. I will list my full pc specs below so you can see what my whole system looks like but the fact of the matter is, there is no reason after UPGRADING why I should be getting lower fps...
What I have tried: I attempted to delete the old Nvidia drivers using driver sweeper. Believing that there may have been issues there I decided to just do a fresh install and its the exact same problem, low fps everywhere. I have tried everything from the 13.6 drivers (the initial cd drivers) to the latest 14.6 beta drivers and nothing is changing, same fps throughout.
I know for a fact that the card I have is not defective as I am playing titles like "Thief" "Saints row the Third" "GTA 4" "War Thunder" "Wolfenstein the new order" "Skyrim" All above the 100fps threshold.
Vsync is not on, fps limiter has been tested in every spot it can be in
every single graphical option has been tested and tried in different configurations and nothing is changing. One interesting thing is that prior to getting my new GPU, when I had the GTX 630, enabling the "Super secret settings" and going to the "blobs" or "blobs 2" would cause my fps to go to about 15, now with this new card, the fps doesnt move at all when enabling this, if I stand in one spot and enable it the fps is exactly the same so the card is keeping up it seems like MC is limiting me to very low fps for some reason, with the fps limiter off.
Just to wrap up, I am one of those people that could pretty much tell you instantly when a game drops below 60fps. I see it, I feel it with my input, I see how fast my mouse drags the thing I am controlling and can 100% tell when its not in the 60fps range. I have a server where others have AMD cards and they seem to be getting worse fps than me in the 5fps range, they have lower cards than I but again they are playing brand new titles at 60fps, and is causing them to stop playing mc and on the server.
PC Specs.
CPU fx 8350
RAM 12gb 1600mhz memory
GPU R9 290
MC is running on a samsung 840 evo SSD 120gb.

Are you taking the piss? I refrained from swearing originally but if you actually look at the damn screenshots you can see that in 1.6.4 I get about 125fps and in anything above it drops to below 30. So annoyed that you just passed this off. Pathetic. Im done with this game anyway. I try to help you people resolve these issues and you just close it as being invalid... Nice one.

I am sorry that you feel this way. The fact that you have poor fps on a specific card suggests that the issue lies either with the hardware, or the drivers. As a standard, the function calls used by OpenGL are expected to work similarly on different hardware. If these calls are failing, or are not behaving as expected, it's often due to some oversight by the hardware manufacturer (see MC-35881 as an example of AMD screwing up). I am not trying to divert blame, or point fingers, but it doesn't make sense for a game to be un-optimized for specific hardware. Seeing as your card is on the higher end of the scale, I expect your issue lies either in your system configuration, or your software drivers. Either way, it would be more advantageous to visit the Support Center, and perhaps go on the help chat, where you could gets assistance in finding the cause to the poor performance.
I understand where you're coming from, I really do, it doesnt make sense, thats the main reason I posted it here. Also in the original post I did explain that I have tried every different driver version since the release of this card.
The main reason I believe it to be a problem with the versions I said in the original post is due to the fact that I can goto 1.6.4 and get 125fps on the exact same map in 1.7 it drops to about 15-20, surely that must indicate a problem somewhere in the matrix?
Also in the original post I did explain there are a few other people on my SMP server that are having similar issues, though they do all seem to be coming from the AMD side, they are all in the same boat as me when in 1.6.4 they are fine for fps, in the 100's however 1.7+ kills them.
Versions 1.7+ use some different rendering functionality, so it's not surprising to see variances in fps. From personal experience with an AMD graphics card, I cannot attest to poor fps. That being said, different hardware setups (GPU, CPU, RAM, etc.) will produce different results, not to mention different OSs. Don't get me wrong, there are dozens of bug reports here already pertaining to fps issues, and they do indeed exist. Typically when comparing hardware though, the problem usually lies in the implementation of the hardware, or it's ability to function with other hardware devices. Most evidence I've seen suggests AMD has less than adequate support for OpenGL, but that still wouldn't explain such low FPS in your situation. I cannot say that AMD cards get lower FPS than nvidia, as I've seen just as many individuals with issues on nvidia cards.
This is a technical support issue; this site is for bug reports only. For technical support please use the Mojang Support Center.
Please also note that it is unreasonable to compare Minecraft to most other games, as those use DirectX whereas Minecraft uses OpenGL, which are different standards and have different requirements.
