/setblock X X X redstone doesn't work

In both command blocks and when running the command, /setblock X X X redstone nor /setblock X X X minecraft:redstone (assuming X X X are valid coordinates) do not place the redstone saying that redstone and minecraft:redstone are not valid names.

This is intended. minecraft:redstone is an item. You need minecraft:redstone_wire

Why redstone_wire when it's called redstone dust?

It's called redstone_wire because that is the name the developers chose.
