Hopper beneath furnace doesn't remove empty buckets

If a hopper is feeding smeltable items from the top, and a hopper is feeding Lava Buckets from the side, when the lava is emptied from the bucket, the empty bucket stays in the fuel slot and blocks any further smelting. I think it would be better to make an exception for the hopper beneath a furnace so it will pull an item from the fuel slot if that item is an empty bucket. Also, bugs aside, I think the hopper is an excellent idea. Keep up the good work.

n1 idea

automates smelting even further - would love it
btw I now use lava more often as fuel, thanks to the hopper

This is a feature request, not a bug report, and should be moved to the Minecraft Forums.

I disagree with this not being a bug. (Obviously, since I submitted it) A bug is when something isn't working as intended. Having the hopper attach to the side of the furnace to specifically feed the fuel slot shows that the hopper is intended to streamline the smelting process. Since the continued processing within the furnace is hindered by the empty bucket, I would say that it is interfering with the intended functionality of the hopper and could be considered a bug. I'll consider this to not be a bug when the Resolution is set to Works As Intended.

Yes, it would be helpful, but currently works consistently with other fuels (placing in slot, but not removing). Therefore this is expected behaviour to me. However, that does not mean I don't want it changed as much as you 🙂

@Oscar Parker: Empty buckets are not fuels, so there is no reason they should work the same as fuels.

The wiki says: "hoppers under the furnace will only take finished products". Buckets are not a product, but the remnants of a fuel.

A bug is a mismatch between expected behaviour and actual behaviour. The wiki documents actual behaviour. The intuitive thing to happen is for the hopper to extract the empty bucket.

just found out, this is solved to our satisfaction in 1.5.1: empty buckets get spit out the fuel slot, to make space for full lavabuckets.
thx to the developers

I just tested this on 1.5.1, and noticed that it is still not corrected.

Configuration:
Hopper on left of furnace
Hopper on top of furnace
Hopper below furnace, piped to adjacent chest

Works normally using other fuels. Loads a lava bucket as expected, but doesn't pipe the bucket out. I waited for the entire cycle to finish just in case, but it never moved.

It works for me.
Have you tried to put empty buckets into the fuel slot? they should fall out.
Are you using a unmodded MC?
Remember a redstone current stops a hopper from doing his thing.

It does not work in 1.5.1 for me. even with simple furnace with hopper under it. placing lava bucket or empty bucket leaves it in place.

Edit: tried setting "force update" on the client and the results are the same
Edit2: in duplicate thread found about server not beeing 1.5.1... well this works perfect in single player.

migrated

EDIT: It works for me in SSP, but not SMP.

check server twice. that was in my case 🙂 you can freely play it with 1.5.1 client on 1.5 server and only on 1.5.1 server

intende behaviour now, when burning sponge with a bukkit in it, it will fill the bukkit with water, then when there is water in, they will take it out
