In certain enclosed areas, torch light doesn't travel to adjacent exposed blocks. This is regardless of whether the torch is placed before or after the block face is exposed.

Smooth lighting is disabled in these pictures. Turning on smooth lighting does allow a small amount of light into the adjacent blocks, but it's very little - just the smoothed light; the base light level.is still zero.
No mods were used in this world.
This block of dirt was exposed in a lit room during daylight, but the light level while standing at the block shows as zero.
Confirmed in single player survival however I have not yet found a way to reproduce this on demand. It happens to me "at random".
I experienced this too, and it fixed when I changed the brightness in minecraft (from moody to bright).
Is this still an issue in the current Minecraft Snapshot 15w47c or later? If so, please update the affected versions in order to best aid Mojang ensuring bugs are still valid in the latest releases/pre-releases.
