As of 10/09/2014 in 1.8 single player survival on a machine with mid-range hardware, I am having the same problem. At night, you can walk through a plains biome (with LARGE BIOMES set) and almost never see a single enemy. I need string from spiders, for instance, and I am on day 11 and have seen only about 5 mobs at night total. This is really causing trouble. The game is approaching unplayable because I cannot get the resources I need from mobs. When night fell, I walked 300 blocks through a plains biome and literally saw 1 zombie, that's it. Has there been any update about when this will be addressed? Thanks so much! -Matthew

Are you sure this isn't your spawn point and you are not within the 16 block radius of protection? If you move away from the area, can you place or break blocks? Does this problem happen in any other areas besides this one?

Your video is a little long. 🙂 Perhaps you could trim / edit it down to just the part that demonstrates the problem you are having. Lots of tickets to go through. 🙂 If you are unable to edit it, maybe you could just edit your post to indicate what time index we should jump to in the video to begin watching the relevant part. Just a thought.

This is a duplicate of MC-66017. Please be sure to search the bug reports first to see if your issue has already been reported. The majority of tickets are duplicates and sorting through them consumes a lot of time. Thanks for understanding.
At least cakes have been fixed in 1.8.
You might consider correcting the title of your bug report. It may be affecting people's ability to search for similar issues or whether or not they open it. Just a thought.

My sincere apologies. Clearly I was reading too fast.
Unable to reproduce using the following steps:
1) Start a new single player creative game.
2) From the creative inventory, add to the hotbar 1 anvil, 1 dispenser, 1 wooden button and 1 cake.
3) Place the anvil and click on it to open its GUI.
4) Place the cake in the first slot of the Anvil's GUI and click in the "Repair & Name" field.
5) Rename the cake to "CheeseCake" (for example).
6) Remove the named Cake from the third slot of the Anvil's GUI and place it in the hotbar.
7) Exit the Anvil's GUI.
8) Place the dispenser and Shift+Click the wooden button onto the side of the Dispenser.
9) Click on the dispenser to open its GUI and place the named Cake into it.
10) Exit the Dispenser's GUI and click on its wooden button.
11) Pick up the dispensed cake and observe it is still named "CheeseCake".

The "Affected Versions" section automatically collapses after it gets to a certain length so you actually have to click on it to see that 1.8 is listed in there as well. It's very easy to miss because of that. I've done it myself. 🙂
Respectfully, I believe the gentleman above already answered that question:
"This is a technical support issue; this site is for bug reports only. For technical support please use the Mojang Support Center."
Do you do a lot of rapidly swinging items in the air? 🙂
I am having this very same problem only under 1.8.3. It seems odd to me that something this obvious would go unresolved this long and there be such a low number of votes and watchers on this ticket. I kind of thought the maximize button would be something a lot of people use. Because of boring reasons no one wants to hear, I must play Minecraft in non-fullscreen mode so it looks like I won't be able to use 1.8.3 at all until this is fixed...
