if you stand on a slime block, an get fired up but you stand more on the air then the slime block you get damige. But you don't get fall damige when you fall on air or a slime block.
I think it is becous you do get damige when you fall on air. If you make it so that you don't get fall damige on air I think it is fixed

Maybe you take damage because you landed on air, maybe you took damage because your were holding shift.

yes you do, when you land on the edge of a slime block, you actually land on the block right below you, in this case air, and only slime blocks will shoot you back up with no fall damage

this has also been reported before a cople of times, no, you will fall on the air, not trough it
all blocks you will fall on, with the exeption of slime blocks will give you fall damage
