I built a high efficiency mob farm as shown in this video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YA2siTV5s4Q) that works perfectly in a singleplayer world and in vanilla 1.8.1 minecraft servers, but on realms no mobs spawn in the farm. The light level throughout the entire farm is 0 and no other players are on to split the mob cap. I am the required distance of 24 blocks away from the farm and no other mobs are spawning underground because of my position of y160. From what I have found on google, it is because there is a bug that mobs won't spawn properly in render distances under 10. Thank you for taking your time to look over this bug.

I have this same problem. Not enough mobs spawn on MC Realms. I tried to turn up render chunks all the way, but it doesn't change anything – besides, on realms you can't change the server render distance.
There is no such problem on single player or running multiplayer locally.
This is frustrating and I'll probably end up canceling Realms because of the very short draw distance and mob spawning limitations.

Is this still an issue in the current Minecraft 1.8.8 or later? If so, please update the affected versions in order to best aid Mojang ensuring bugs are still valid in the latest releases/pre-releases.
It's most likely due to the render distance bug. Try turning the render distance to 10 or above (if you are able to) and see if it changes.
