Vines breaking wooden slabs

My house has a row of planks, then a row of glass blocks on top. Wooden half slabs are attached to the sides of the glass blocks. If I put vines on the planks below the glass, they will sometimes grow UP the side of the glass, destroying the half slab in the process.
