Fullscreen Minecraft crashes in Windows 8.1 when something interupts it

When playing in fullscreen on any version on my computer with Windows 8.1 64-bit, if something interrupts it (ex. Java Auto Updater), instead of exiting fullscreen and pausing itself, it crashes and brings up the launcher.

A fatal error has been detected by the Java Runtime Environment:
