Moderator Note
The Mobile Intel 965 Express video card is unable to run 1.7.4 and future versions of Minecraft PC edition on Windows. You will need to buy a new video card or computer to play new versions. Alternatively, you may use an alternate operating system, such as linux, since the issue lies in the graphics drivers provided by Intel.
For now, you can still play 1.7.2 or older versions of the game. To change your game to a different version, start the launcher. Select Edit Profile. In the "Use Version" dropdown menu, select the game version you want. Then click Save Profile.
If that won't help, try enabling VBOs and VSync. If that won't help, please use the Mojang Support Center.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Launching the game with the launcher works fine (although there is a handled FileNotFoundException which does not affect the game). However minimising the game causes it to crash immediately:
A fatal error has been detected by the Java Runtime Environment: EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION (0xc0000005) at pc=0x000000000c90930a, pid=7448, tid=6268

I believe this is not a Minecraft error, but an actual JVM error. Attached is the log, which tells me the error occurred in "Native Code".
At the time, I still had the launcher open, but upon further testing this does not matter.

No, not fixed. I installed both 32bit and 64bit update 21, and the error log says "7.0_21-b11". I'll update the attached error log to the latest one.
This is a technical support issue; this site is for bug reports only. For technical support please use the Mojang Support Center.
I can't find the support email address, mind telling me what it is please? Thanks 🙂
That's because there isn't one. Mojang does not have technical support personnel. The resources on the support page that Tails listed are what's available.
The crash occured in ig4icd64.dll
that is part of the crappy Intel graphics card driver. Get an update for your graphics card.
Now you're telling me that as if I've neglected to update anything. I'm using an HP g4 pavillion, and they have f*cked up switchable graphics that mean Minecraft and OpenGL applications can't use the dedicated Radeon GPU. HP refuses to update anything ever, so that's probably why.
If this continues into 1.6 I will not be happy, with HP more than Mojang. >😞
Reinstalled it, still not fixed. This sounds too much like a Mojang issue because I've never had this with Java before.
I found out the HP driver was out of date by a whole MAJOR version (8.x instead of 9.x) and so downloaded the right one from intel. And it is STILL broken. I refuse to believe this is just a problem with my drivers being out of date.
I found bugs like this that have happened before, in the same .dll file, e.g MC-612. I haven't touched my drivers, it's something that changed between 1.5 and 13w16a.
i'm having this problem to and below is my computer's specs from crash dump:

----EDIT----
I've updated java to 7 update 21(32 and 64 bit) and minecraft to 13w16b and i still am getting problems.
FFS I told you before this is not a Java version problem, or a driver version problem. I've updated both of these things to the newest level, in the case of Java both 32 and 64 bit. I made an Oracle bug report but that's probably never going to be read or fixed, since it's a huge company.
The crash occured in ig4icd64.dll that is part of the crappy Intel graphics card driver. Get an update for your graphics card.
While this has happened to me on an older computer with an Intel graphics card, it also happens to me on a 2012 model one with Intel HD Graphics 3000 and Nvidia Geforce GT555M, each with their newest released drivers. It happens no matter which one is active. How is it that the "crappy" card as you call it causes this widespread issue even when it is not active?
Also, this only happens with the new snapshots. I have tried to reproduce with 1.5.2 on the new launcher and the bug is not present.
This is the crash report requested by Kumasa. If it helps, the launcher says in the dev console "Game ended with bad state (exit code 1)."
EDIT: It appears the attachment and the comment are not linked, so it is the one ending in 3684.
Listen, it's NOT the drivers or updates for anything. I have the newest released drivers for both of my graphics cards as well, and the newest Java version. The java doesn't even matter since this is on java 6. Don't "resolve" this, throw it away and blame it on drivers because tons of people are getting this. Platypus's report says the game exited with exit code 1, which means something happened inside the code and not in the JVM - the method "system.exit(1)" was called. So stopp blaming it on us. Just get one of the devs to look at this for ten seconds, I want a second opinion.
Grum's (Mojang dev) comment on MC-15092:
These sort of crashes are completely out of our control. The best we can do is suggest you trying the new launcher and/or install different drivers.
The simple fact is that Minecraft no longer supports that video card. That's simply the way of software development: sometimes, you've got to leave old hardware behind if you want to add new features. You'll either have to find a way to force your computer to use the dedicated video card instead of the integrated one (This support article may help), or hope that HP or the driver vendor will resolve it.
@Torabi
That post by Grum isn't even on this issue page. Also, don't try and act like you know what's going on because this happens on old and new hardware. I can confirm that this at least happens on Intel and Nvidia graphics cards.
@Torabi if you had bothered reading the comments or the HP support page you would realise that certain HP laptops have a bug where the dGPU (high power) cannot be assigned to an openGL application in dynamic mode, only in fixed mode. But HP only updated the newest most expensive models, leaving my (less than 2 year old) model with the bug - all they need to do is give me the option to enable fixed mode graphics but HP are lazy and have terrible support. Given this only appeared in the latest series of snapshots, this is Mojang's fault - nothing changed my end.
I explained I had a g4. Does the "this pertains to" line on the customer support page say g4?
Try disabling the integrated card in the BIOS then.
While you're encountering this problem as a result of a change in the Minecraft code, they're not going to change it back. They've made those changes either to implement new features, or improve performance. Your hardware is being left behind, and you can't expect everyone to support it forever. Here are your options:
Try to resolve the issue yourself.
Complain to HP, or your graphic card vendors.
Roll back to the latest version of Minecraft that worked, and stick with it.
Upgrade your hardware to something supported.
My computer is less than 2 years old. It has one of the latest i5 processors and corresponding integrated cards. It doesn't need upgrading, and if you're telling me "use old versions of Minecraft" I'd like my money back. Can you imagine if the government said "we're putting automated toll booths on the roads - if you don't have a new car from this year with the tech for that, go out and buy one"? I've explained that HP doesn't listen to their customers (so when I do buy a new computer it won't be an HP - but I can't upgrade every year). I've tried VERY hard to force my computer to use the dGPU, disabling the card in the device manager does not work.
The main issue is even though the vendors have added multi-gpu systems, there is no 'sane' way of pre-selecting which one you want to use.
There is no way through code to do this, so neither LWJGL or Mojang can do this for you.
Before the new launcher you had to add javaw.exe to the list. It's quite possible that both NVidia and ATI have added that to the list of known discrete-gpu-wanting-applications. However we're not using that anymore thus and previous magical setting will fail to work.
Each (ATI and NVidia) have their own systems for 'selecting' what mode to prefer for which program. Figure out how yours work and add java.exe to the list and presto it will work.
After that, complain with ATI/Nvidia that they made a stupid system that forces consumers to do this by hand 😃 (or ask them nicely to update the Minecraft entry (if it even existed)).
I thought I'd upgraded all of my drivers when I was told that was the best way to fix it, but it turns out they weren't the newest. After using Device Manager to update them for both cards and downloading 13w19a, it no longer crashes 🙂 (I'm really surprised, because I had downloaded the newest ones from the appropriate website).
It probably was my fault then 😞 Sorry for the trouble then, I should have double checked all my drivers.
Anyone else getting this problem, device manager is your friend. Use that to double check everything is as updated as it can be.
EDIT: Weird. Just did some further testing, now it only crashes if you are in the title screen (with the panoramic background) or mojang splash icon, not if you are in game or in any type of menu. But because it's fixed ingame, I'm regarding it as solved.
I was linked as a duplicate here after I reported this problem with w23a. I've never had this problem with previous updates, and given that this page is from a version where I had no problems, I'd assume something had to change in the game that started this
For me it didn't occur when fullscreening (I actually tested that) but for others it did so that is fair.
I am having the same error with a brand new MS Surface PRO. It used to work, but after a recent update no longer functions.
The error occurs immediately after launching the game.

This has been fixed for me in 1.6.1 I didn't update java (unless it did it without my knowledge) or my drivers, so it must have been fixed in the code
Once again, a mod changes it to suggest we haven't updated all of our drivers again and again and again.
It is possible that working drivers do not yet exist (and may never) for some system configurations, whether it be hardware or OS. Regardless, there is nothing Mojang can do about it, unless you expect them to do the job of your hardware vendor and provide working drivers. Minecraft is dependent on correctly functioning OpenGL, Java, drivers, hardware, etc. If your system does not or cannot meet those requirements, it is beyond their capability and responsibility to do anything about it.
Neither Mojang nor the volunteers here on the Mojira have an obligation to guide you in fixing problems that exist with your system, and yet, in many cases, they have attempted to do so. If those solutions are not sufficient, then it is up to you, as owner of the system, to seek out assistance on your own time and dime.
I never suggested you had to. I'm simply saying it's not fair to blame it on us not updating drivers. I'm getting a new computer soon anyway 🙂
Once again, a mod changes it to suggest we haven't updated all of our drivers again and again and again.
That was me.
Sorry for being helpful.
That's whats confusing to me. I have a brand new PC. A stock Windows 8 Surface Pro, fully updated and it still does not work.
I paid money for this software, so if it does not work on hardware/software which came out this year, its Minecraft's responsibility to solve the issue. You can't blame it on old hardware.
I understand the issue may not be with the Minecraft code, but its still Minecraft's responsibility to contact Oracle (Java), ATI, Microsoft, whomever to log a ticket and fix it.
I actually just updated my drivers (using an override so that it would let me) and now I get this crash, but I didn't before... so I think that this may be a problem with the newest drivers...? The easy workaround is just minimize on the level select screen. Seeing as this is a problem with the Intel graphics driver there probably isn't much Mojang can do to fix it and the way that graphics drivers update you almost never update because there are specialized versions for each machine (and as soon as the company makes a new machine they stop validating new drivers for the old machine).
[Even though it's resolved maybe a mod could change it to say it effects 1.6.2 as this doesn't show up in a search as it doesn't effect the current version (and also maybe because it is closed..)]
I have this problem because I updated my drivers. Can a moderator mark this as unresolved again?
No, MC-13113 is a crash in msvcr100.dll
, this is a crash in ig4icd64.dll
Minecraft crashes on our old Mobile Intel GMA 950 with the latest drivers. It works with Minecraft 1.7.2 but not 1.7.4.
@Galaxy_2Alex. On the system requirements on the Mojang Support Page:
https://help.mojang.com/customer/portal/articles/325948-minecraft-system-requirements
It says Intel GMA 950 is supported, there was no notice at all that Mojang had removed support for it in 1.7.4 (it works with MC 1.7.2)
Mine started crashing in Minecraft 1.7.3 release (no fix in 1.7.4), seems to be coincidental with Twitch support announcement. Latest is that works for me is 13w49a. JRE is 7.0_45-b18; Mobile Intel 965 Express with drivers 8.15.10.1867 (confirmed up-to-date) and a Graphics Media Accelerator library that is newer than the latest one I can download (according to the setup program of the latest one I can download.) My ticket is MC-42345; Tails "resolved" it like a bot.
By the way, I went to Mojang support first and was referred here by Nasim.
System requirements might have changed from 1.7.4 onwards. This is not a confirmation, but it seems like that because more people are getting those issues. The only help we can give out is to update your drivers.
The Intel 4 Series (and older) video cards are unable to play 1.7.4 and future versions of Minecraft. You will need to buy a new video card or computer to play new versions.
For now, you can still play 1.7.2 or older versions of the same.
Question: Is it related to Twitch integration? If so, can you offer a non-Twitch version? I'm quite certain that there are a heck of a lot more people who'd like to play Minecraft on marginal hardware than there are people who want to stream their games on Twitch all the time.
Minimum System Requirements will rise in the next versions anyway. This is the first step.
Playing on those is no goal for buying a system to save money. If you want to play Minecraft in the future, you'll need to upgrade your system.
Or just continue to play older versions. The Minecraft launcher allows you to select the version you want to play for that reason, among others. It is inevitable that future updates will increase the system requirements, but there's no reason why someone who currently enjoys the game should feel they always have to be playing the latest version.
In my case (Intel 965 Mobile Express) the break happened between Snapshot 13w49a and Release 1.7.3. Might I suggest for the guy mucking with the description (Galaxy_2Alex) to fix it like this:
"For now, you can still play 1.7.2 or older versions of the game. [good instructions] ... You can also try snapshots by checking 'experimental development versions("snapshots")'
"If you are new to Minecraft, and have a laptop with an a built-in (integrated) graphics card, rather than a dedicated card, it is highly suggested that you try the demo before purchase."
If that last bit sounds familiar, it's because I cut-and-pasted it from https://help.mojang.com/customer/portal/articles/325948-minecraft-system-requirements I think it belongs here because Paul Faure and others "paid money for this software, so if it does not work on hardware/software which came out this year..." and it wouldn't be good PR to ignore that.
What has me quite concerned and frustrated is that this break, for me and many others happened on a minor version change... a bugfix release. If my dollar store GPU were butthurt from a major update (i.e. 1.6.4 to 1.7 or (especially) an intervening snapshot), it is perfectly understandable, and therefore easy for me to quietly accept that I need a new toaster. Where it actually happened, between a bugfix snapshot and a bugfix release, is what makes it a major WTF moment for me.
Here's a thought for perhaps making Minecraft 1.7.5 the last version that'll work for these systems: Was the LWJGL library changed between 13w49a and 1.7.3? If so, can it be rolled back (perhaps with the loss of Twitch integration support, the feature that I suspect is causing the problem with 965)? I'm going to try that myself, pop the NIC and see if it changes the behaviour of 1.7.3. See you later.
And... it turns out that Minecraft appears to be using LWJGL 2.8.4 and the current version is 2.9.1. Updating it to the latest version had no effect on the behaviour of 1.7.3 or 1.7.4, which still crashed at ig4dev32.dll+0x3e88 (that is always where 1.7.3 and 1.7.4 crashes on my system.)
Terry Wilson: The Twitch streaming service was introduced in 1.7.4, the update that you call a "bugfix update", but that's simply not the case. It's pretty simple to explain: Yes, the increasment is caused by the Twitch libraries. End of the line.
The fixes are, as far as I know, not substantial, and you should be able to connect to 1.7.4 severs with a 1.7.2 client.
Were the Twitch libraries brought in 1.7.4? It breaks at 1.7.3 for me. I think it might be useful to know what's actually causing the break Also did you mean "increment" instead of "increasment"? If not, I'm not familiar with the latter term.
Finally, are the Twitch libraries needed for anything more than live streaming? Minecraft is the only game that I've ever heard of that boasts of built-in screen broadcasting support, and I seriously doubt that it is an appropriate feature in any game unless there is a bona fide requirement for the game's multiplayer functionality. I'm not going to be particularly impressed if this is really the reason I can't play the latest versions.
Twitch streaming was introduced in 13w47a at first, I counted full versions, and the first full version to actually have twitch integration was 1.7.4, as 1.7.3 was never a "full" version.
(Yes, I meant increasment. Typen on a phone cuased some typos. Sorry about that.)
Minecraft =/= other game
If you look an a friday/saturday on Twitch, you'll see lots of Minecraft streams because it is a very popular streaming game. Sure it's not like Dota 2, but remember: It's an Indie Game sold 13 million times (just on PC), and (to keep it simple):
You cannot please everybody.
The addition of Twitch integration was a milestone (in the opinion of many people), and was also planned for a long time (as far as I know).
And yes, there are and will be unpleased people because of things like that or because of re-balancing (e.g. new zombie behavior).
Still confused on "increasment" vs. "increment"...
I couldn't test 13w47a, but 13w47e is working okay on my system. I certainly agree with, "you cannot please everybody", but that sharpens a point I made earlier: if integrated Twitch support is causing this problem, it is probably frustrating more users than it is pleasing. We probably agree that while you can't please everyone, it still makes sense to please as many players as you can.
As for those new zombies, they can eat this as far as I'm concerned 😉 Please remember though, if the game won't start up at all, problems caused by changes to mob behaviour are entirely academic, Twitch streaming even more so.
(The increasment thing: )
...English is not my native language, so sorry 🙂
Basically the, requirements are higher as listed on the page now.
Your problem probably started probably after an update of some libraries, probably the Twitch ones. Yes, it might be a bug, but as the requirements are raising anyway on 1.8, I guess they are going to keep it that way.
Mojang made a really good Job with trying to please everybody (better than any company I know), but if they would stick with old APIs (like OpenGL, which seems to be the problem for many many systems), they would have a harder job and we wouldn't have new awesome things. That's just how it goes.
Oh yeah, you can blame Intel for your problem by the way, because they decided to stop supporting this series. And, as far as I'm aware of, a new graphics card isn't that expensive (especially for Minecraft you don't need a 300$ up model), you'll get a pretty decent one for ~80$ (GeForce GT 640, which is numberically just one step lower than mine, and mine can run many games on full settings). This model will run Minecraft for a looooong time (as far as I can tell).
For those on Intel 965 Chipsets or any chipset in the 4 Series you may want to take a look at this workaround: http://hopper.minecraft.net/help/references/intel-4-series-chipsets/
Same issue persists even on more modern Intel chips, suggested solution (updating drivers) doesn't work.
In my case, minecraft 1.8.1 worked on this machine before, after updating graphics drivers didn't work anymore. I don't think the intel drivers are the real issue here, since they weren't touched when the crashes began.
Please look into this again.
@Christoph Schmidt: Computers using that card (Intel 4 Series) do not meet the minimum system requirements, they are simply too old to run Minecraft. The issue is definitely on Intel's side, since they released the drivers that made it stop working, and they never fixed it since they stopped support for them.
@Galaxy_2Alex: In my case, it's a Intel 7 Series that stopped working with minecraft, not a 4 Series. I have opened a ticket on my issue (which was closed as a duplicate of this one, which it isn't), if you want to have a closer look at it.
MC-75324
@Christoph Schmidt: I changed the Resolution on that ticket to "Invalid" for convenience reasons. It's a tech support issue, something that is not an issue on Mojang's side.
This was working with minecraft 1.8.1 until a week ago. My computer isn't even a year old (its closer to 2 months old) and your response is buy a new computer? can you please look to see if there is not another fix?
@@unknown: No one said that you need a new computer. You just need to install non-broken Intel drivers.
For technical support please use the Mojang Support Center.
ok then please tell us where we can get patched versions of this driver since you have already stated that Intel does not provide it, nor do they offer support for it. Otherwise you are telling everyone to buy a new computer.
@Lukas Vebeliunas:
I adjusted the post now. If you still want to try to use one of the unofficial drivers which might break your system, please use Google or similar search engines.
Thanks you have been a great help sir!
screw that- one week is all it took to be obsolete. Now minecraft is busted again and re installing the driver does not help. do you have a longer lasting fix?
An alternative option, though perhaps a bit technical for some people, is to use linux. The drivers are only broken on Windows.
also I use this computer to work from and so im not going to switch to linux unless i use another computer. But please Alex is there another fix that lasts?
There is no official fix for this issue, since Intel dropped support for that graphics chipset without releasing a fix. If that is a desktop computer, there is the possibility of installing a new graphics card. Apart from that, you will limited to playing version 1.7.2.
The 965 express chipset was discontinued in 2009. Unless the computer you bought was over 5 years old, you may be experiencing a different issue. I'd recommend you visit the Mojang Support Center to see if they can assist with your issue.
this has been mentioned previously but clearly no one likes to be careful. thank you for telling me that it was a duplicate, commenting without reading my previous comments on the matter, and not helping. I'm glad Alex had a temp fix, however your comment of get a new computer or that maybe it ISN'T a duplicate does not help Cube. And I'm sorry if i sound like I'm raging, but the reality is that i AM raging.
@@unknown: This site is a bug tracker and not a help forum or similar. As already said before: For technical support please use the Mojang Support Center.
I would like to point out that the Moderator Note is technically incorrect - I am still able to run the latest versions of Minecraft (currently 1.8.8) on my GM965 by running the game in Linux. The linux drivers are far better and even support OpenGL 2.1 (Windows is limited to 1.5). If buying a new computer is not an option, Linux does do the job.
