When you defeat the ender dragon, the portal spawns on top of the preset exit portal, if you kill it above. I am not sure if it applies everywhere that it will just spawn a portal, or not, but I will test that now. Also, keep up the good work!
EDIT: Also, It will not let you kill the dragon unless you are on top of the portal area
