What I expected to happen was:
Probably an empty compass, or one that spins randomly (like in the nether or end)
What actually happened was:
You can abuse being able to see the compass by gathering the materials and seeing the compass in the crafting table, or by crafting it in a creative world, going in to the survival world and going into the statistics menu, and clicking "items"
Steps to reproduce:
1. Gather the materials to make a compass (4 iron, 1 redstone)
2. Craft the compass, but don't actually put it in your inventory
OR
1. Craft the compass in a creative world
2. Go in your survival world
3. Go to Pause menu > Statistics > Items

Is this still a concern in the current Minecraft version? If so, please update the affected versions in order to best aid Mojang ensuring bugs are still valid in the latest releases/pre-releases.
Clocks and compasses have specifically coded textures that always function when shown anywhere in game. This probably isn't a bug.
Also if you're on creative mode the compass symbol for the search tab is an accurate compass, as are the clock and compass shown in the tools section. But I assume most of us don't mind creative mode players getting this since they could just create one out of thin air already. Kind of like how the item frame duplication glitch that requires creative mode probably will never be fixed because they don't mind creative players being able to duplicate stuff (people use it for enchanted stuff when they finally get just the right enchantments).
This is already fixed for the statistics screen. The reason why Grum marked is as Won't fix is probably because in the current state (based on deobfuscated code of 1.10) it would require some kind of hack to fix this because there is no distinction between crafting grid slots and inventory slots when they are drawn.
I always thought that's a nice gimmick.
It's not really comfortable to run around and always have to enter the statistics and to scroll to the right place, especially in multiplayer.
But this may be an issue in Adventure mode, if the player has previously crafted a compass.
