The bug
Torch particles are either slanted or don't appear at all when the sleeping animation is being played.
How to reproduce
Place a bed
Place a torch in front of it somewhere nearby
Sleep on the bed at night and look at the torch. The particles will be slanted.
Note: likely caused by the player still looking in the direction they were looking when right-clicking the bed.

Screenshots for Tristan Allen's Comment

I'm attaching a couple more screenshots.
The first one shows how I was standing near the bed just before I clicked to sleep.
The second one shows a reproduction of the bug, showing the slanted flames.
The flames (along with all items laying on the ground) are a 2D image that rotates depending on where you're standing, and always faces you. What I managed to figure out is that when you go to sleep, the flames are still slanted towards where you were standing. I stood in many different positions and the flames were always pointing to where I was when I clicked to sleep.

NO. I LIKE THIS BUG

I know before you were able to rotate them while in the bed by just moving the mouse around. This also changed the sky colour. Don't know if that's still like that though.

Yes I am aware that the 2d image rotates facing you depending on where you are standing. It's just like the fishing pole hook. It just seems like on odd thing to look at when you are sleeping, and I'm not sure if this is a problem that existed prior to 1.4, or if it even is a problem.

This is a bug, and a simple fix! Just update the player position and rotation to the sleep viewing angle when player enters the bed!

@Joe Groocock Easier said than done.

I know you just gotta position yourself right when entering the bed, but it's not worth it to watch how you enter the bed for some silly bug like this. It's not a big deal it's just a little annoying. I just think the particles should be facing you when you are in the bed.

Confirmed in 13w02b.

Happens with potion particles as well.

that report also suggests that the issue is rooted in the rendering being relative to the viewer instead of the orientation of the related object (as least in the case of torches)

Still reproduceable in 14w32d!

Still in 1.8.

In 1.8.1 prerelease 1, this bug is partially fixed - no longer are particles slanted; They are gone completely.

Can still confirm in 1.8.1-pre2

This issue is caused by the player's facing direction staying the same when lying in a bed. See the two screenshots I am attaching.

Still happens in 15w44b.

Strangely, this hapens more with some resolutions than with others. To reproduce (if it doesn't happen for you), resize game window to a different, relatively small, size. But not too small, or it won't happen either. 1290x680 works for me, whereas in 1440p it doesn't seem to happen at all.
