If there are empty (completely air) chunks in view, when the game attempts to create an icon for the world, the icon will be black (transparent?).
Steps to reproduce:
1. Create a new world (easiest with Void Superflat)
2. Look at an area with missing or empty chunks
3. Press esc to trigger the icon generation
4. Save and quit, then look at the new icon generated.

Confirmed for
15w49b However the black icon seems to be caused by loading an old world, for example a 1.7.10 world
I can confirm that it doesn't always occur. When I say void chunks, I mean 16*16*16 area chunks (not the full height ones).
I am seeing a different but similar issue: in 16w03a, if I delete icon.png, then go into a (normal) world, the icon gets generated before the world loads in, and so I get an icon of the blue sky and the sun before the grassy terrain loaded in.
Are you sure this happens with void chunks only? I'm seeing it happen with ANY new icon, even on old worlds after resetting the icon in the Edit screen from the Select World menu
